While Eclipse is very successful for Java Development, MySQL and PostgreSQL are very populating open source Databases. We cannot compare with brand name like Oracle, Microsoft, or IBM, but MySQL and PostgreSQL are very reasonable for small business.  If your data is less than a terabyte, both MySQL and PostgreSQL definitely can handle it. However, if your data is really big, you better think of Oracle, DB2, and Microsoft enterprise RDBMSes. Open source database is less secure than brand name database, so you have to keep in mind that “how safe is my data”  (Gravelle, 2011).

This article talks about database management system (DBMS) which is a software system that is used to create, maintain, and provide controlled access to user databases. There are two main stream of DBMS such as open source and brand name software. I prefer to use Microsoft SQL server or Oracle than open source because their customer service. I am using SQL server and Oracle every day at work, so I know how important about customer support. If data is really important to you business, using open source database may cost your problem especially when you need outside support.

On the other hand, open source software such as Eclipse, PHP, MySQL, and Linux very popular for middle and small business. If you try to look for an information system job today, you can see that eight out of ten positions require you to know PHP or MySQL. As a CIS student I think we better know how to use some open source software.
