Chapter 6 – Databases{0}
The article that I found talks about the company Gracenote. Gracenote used their Global Media Database to power many applications today. Gracenote uses that database to power Itunes and is used when a user downloads a Cd into their library. Gracenote’s MusicID is used to automatically insert the names of the tracks and artists from the Cd while also adding the album artwork. Gracenote also powers the Genius service for Itunes. It access the user’s library and the Global Media Database to give provide recommendations to the user for songs or artists that they might like. MusicID is an application used by many AT&T phones that allows users to hold up their phone to a song that is playing and it will identify the song and artist. It will also allow them to access the full track or ringtone and offer recommendations to similar songs or artists. Gracenote recently reached its 200 billionth query in September.
I enjoyed this article because it shows how databases are used to provide customers with access to information. I am a user of Itunes and enjoy not having to type in all of the song titles when i copy my CD’s to my Itunes library. Gracenote uses its Global Media Database to help customers find the music or videos that they are searching for. They are providing this service for the digital market that is continuing to grow.
