Chapter 3. Ebusiness
Leslie Murillo
PC World listed Cell phones as the top technology “that [has] shaken the digital world over the last 25 years” in the article, “The 10 Most Disruptive Technology Combinations” (Tynan, 2008). Cell phones have come a long way. They have redefined the way we stay in contact and communicate with others. Instead of having just one function, cell phones have been designed to consolidate all of our communicating needs into one. Cell phones have become an appendage to many individuals because of their capabilities of allowing us to have access to everything in one handheld device. We are not just limited to talk; what make cell phones a disruptive technology are its data capabilities that include, but that are not limited to, “wireless e-mail, messaging and [accessing the Web from any location, 24/7]” (Tynan, 2008).
Other items on PC World’s list included digital cameras and DVR’s. The article states that “YouTube wouldn’t have reached such heights without cheap digital cameras, camcorders, and cell-phone cameras” (Tynan, 2008). The demand for quick digital video has increased. What used to be an expensive large piece of technology has evolved into an affordable, highly portable, camera recording content in easy to upload digital formats rather than tapes. DVR’s have made recording your favorite tv shows easier. Instead of dealing with a VCR, “[recording and] fast forwarding through commercials became as easy as pressing a couple of buttons” (Tynan, 2008). DVR’s became a popular disruptive technology because it “returned control to users and made consumers hungry for even more control over what they watched, when, and where” (Tynan, 2008).
It’s out with the old and in with the new. According to the article, disruptive technology rarely occurs from a single innovation but rather when “two or more technologies converge” (Tynan, 2008). Consumers like products with multiple uses and with sleek compact designs. Such technology is not a necessity but with the ever increasing pace of life, such consolidating and marrying of technologies can allow for a faster, productive, and efficient way of life. It all depends on your personal preference and needs.
