IBM acquires Netezza{0}
September 21, 2010
IBM is swooping up yet another anayltical player in the field of business. After just buying out NewPages they have now got their sights set on Netezza. Netezza is a company that provides high speed analytics in data warehousing. They claim to acquire data 100 times faster than the standard system. This company puts data in the hands of many business fields such as sales, marketing, product development, and human resources. Therefore, giving more insight to the decision making realm.
The vice president of IBM, Steve Mills, says the company would like to bring “analytics” to the masses. They have purchased the new age business for 1.7 billion dollars. Mills says, ” We continue to evolve our capabilities for systems integration, bringing together optimized hardware and software, in response to increasing demand for technology that delivers true business value” (Williams, J). The company believes Netezza is doing just that. IBM has always emphasized the importance of business intelligence (BI) as a key IT necessity. IBM has also shown that BI can help with many business issues.
In order to achieve big databases the traditional architecture will no longer cut it. Many big business, like IBM, are now focuses on new technology that uses more in memory solutions. Netezza now has logic and data working close together, therefore, becoming very fast and reliable and giving out information. The analytic market believes in order to get a leg up in the world of business now a days is to consolidate. Making it easier for many departments to receive information and allowing it to help them with their many ventures.
It has been predicted there will soon be more consolidation databases in the near future, however, there are very few much like Netezza. However, the race is heating up, EMC has purchased Greenplum and Oracle has bought Hyperion. IBM has just become another competitor in the ever going business race.
I think this is what Chapter 5 is all about, in section 5. 1 it was talking about all the things businesses look for in Enterprise Architecture. Netezza has availability, fast performance, and reliability. Especially now it is interesting to see that they are making it more accessible to many people and that logic and data are going hand in hand. I think databases will soon become a lot less complicated and more user friendly. With everything else that is becoming this way I can understand why businesses are wanting their business intelligence to do the same.
