Chapter 4.1 Ethics

Article: CNN Netiquette section “Be polite and put your smartphone down” Aug. 27,2010 by: Andrea Bartz and Breanna Ehrlich

This article was an overview of how cell phones used to be in the past. A quick beep to inform the person that they had a call or text message, unlike today where we now have that plus Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace updates, emails, blogs, and a few hundred thousand apps keeping us distracted. This article goes on to state that “constantly perusing your phone is freaking rude”, goes onto talk about scenarios at restaurants, sidewalks, and closes with “And you’ll make the liberating (albeit depressing) discovery that when you fire up your e-mail again, the world has continued to swivel without your immediate viewage of e-coupons from Suave and that cat video from Uncle Bob. Those are best dealt with when you’re at your desk and supposedly working anyway.”(1)

This relates to the chapter because chapter 4.1 is dedicated to computer ethics as well as information ethics. The chapter defines ethics as the “principles and standards that guide our behavior toward other people”(2), and goes onto state that information has no ethics and that it is the information owners’ responsibility to create some sort of ethical standards as to how to use and control that information. It talks about how most companies now have “e-policies” regarding what employees can and cannot do on the internet while at work.

I like this article because of the sad truth. I cannot tell you how many times I have almost gotten run over or body-slammed myself, or have seen someone else get taken out by another person who is totally zoned out into their phone. They are texting or on Facebook, or updating their Twitter account to let whoever is really that bored to read they are “like OMG on my way to the most boring class” or something of the like (in less than 150 characters of course). But for the most part I like the article because I am sure most of us can relate to at least one of the scenarios portrayed in the article.
