The topic of my article this week talks about the disadvantages and advantages of using Linux PHP vs. Windows ASP for web hosting. A general rule for a Windows or Microsoft coder will usually choice ASP.NET. The advantage of using ASP.NET is the ease of use and relative short learning curve since the software is easy to use. The drawback of using this software is the massive amount of money that will cost to develop and maintain the web page. On the other spectrum we have LAMP, which is open source and has no licensing fees. Which makes it an optimum choice, when on a short budget. The installation of both tend to be the same. What sets Microsoft apart is it easy setup wizards, where LAMP uses coding and dialogs for installation. This may be a problem if the web master or developers has little coding experience. One of the advantages of LAMP is the use of low resources and hardware speeds. This allows it to be installed in virtually any host. ASP.NET is ran on Windows which can be a problem when being installed in old computer hardware. When it comes down to it there really is no one better web hosting advantage over the other. It all really depends on many factors such as specific use and funds to develop the website.

I found this article to be really interesting and useful when deciding what web hosting to choice from. I have started a website myself and found LAMP to be the best choice for my specific web needs. Taking this class has also shown me how to integrate some of the things learned in class into my own personal website. I think it is essential for students to understand the differences between web hosting options, and help them choice which one suits their needs. This relates to class because students will someday may be in the market to start their own websites. Now that we have gained skills and knowledge in ASP.NET we will be able to personally create our website and manage it.

LAMP and Linux in general is something I wish they would teach more at Cal Ploy. Linux may be harder to use based on the fact it is not inherently meant to be user friendly, but it is much safer and or course cheaper. Those going into networking or security, you understand the importance of Linux in the field. Something we as students should see more.

Very informative article. I agree that LAMP is better choice for create the web. I think Linux is more complicated than LAMP. Besides that LAMP is the use of low resources and hardware speeds which is better for developer to do their project. Thank you for posting this article.
