Storage Technology

In today’s business industry, the use of information system is important in expanding and improving how a company works.  The important factor in managing a business is storing information.  There is an increase of data that makes it essential to have an information storage management within the industry.  The storage technology assists businesses to control and manage their products and services.  It provides a better way to store, access and to examine data that will improve the product and services in order to satisfy the customer with the best quality.  A storage technology has the ability to access and identify every bit of information that is stored for future references.  In using a storage data, there is an advantages and disadvantages for businesses to use storage technology.

The main task that management does in a business is accessing the information about he company.  That is why storage is essential to keep the business going.  With storage technology, there is a variety of ways to store data.  The top five storage technology are virtualization, 10 gigabit Ethernet versus fibre channel, disks versus tape, de-duplication and flash based storage.  Virtualization storage is “the big story right now as it pushes a transformation in organization’ storage infrastructure, where direct-attached storage is gradually giving way to network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area networks (SAN)” (Lau, 2005).  An example of virtualization is the future storage of cloud computing.  The fibre channel is the standard choice for the interconnect of the data center, but the 10 gigabit Ethernet is here to challenge how the fibre channel works.  Even if vendors argue that the fibre channel is the “faster medium for data center storage,” the Ethernet has the ability to offer new improved speed and storage that the fibre channel can not offer.  The disk and tape storage are used as back up storage for the companies data.  Important information that is essential to keep a business running is the data, therefore having a back up is important.  Loosing data and important information can cause a business millions of money to restore onto the database.  The disk and tape also gives the business the ability to meet the regulatory requirements.  This is the storage technology “that is very much geared toward long-term archiving.”  De-duplication is another back up storage that many companies can use.  It is “often used with the virtual tape libraries” that functions the same as storage, but data can be retrieve at a faster speed even if it is a back up or being recovered.  The flash based storage is using the flash based disks and server in the storage of data.  The flash technology provides better performance and response time in accessing and storing data (Lau, 2005).

In addition, there is an advantage and disadvantage for businesses in using storage technology.  An example is the solid state disks (SSD) that many company has been using to store data.  It appears the SSD may have the ability to dominate in the storage market enterprise.  The advantages a SSD has for a business is that it is energy efficient.  It help reduce the overall amount of energy being consumed to the device to store data.  The SSD contains latency where it “increases the performance by keeping frequently accessed blocks of data to the SSD storage” (Baker, 2009).  The SSD is also durable and it is incredible with the control of the unstructured files.  It is flexible in it’s usage.  It is compatible with many operating systems.

However, the disadvantage to use a SSD is it can be expensive.  As stated before, for a business to lose their data can cost them millions of dollars to restore lost data due to crashes or power outages.  There is a question on how long the SSD will last when being used.  The SSD technology can not be predicted whether it can replace hard drives in the industry.  Of course, the use of SSD may not be suitable for all users who are storing data.

Thus, it is important for the businesses to store data about their customers, product and services.  Without the data, it will be difficult for the companies to expand and improve for the satisfaction of their customers.  It is better to store all the data and not to worry about losing the information in the future.  Even if storing any information, it is best to have a back up server with the data in case there is a disaster that destroys the information.
