The article I read today was actually really interesting it basically went over visual basics and how it actually got started. Visual basics was created by Microsoft by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz. It was a program that was a great design and one that really tied Microsoft up into the computers. It was a program that  was created to make writing programs easier for users. It was one of the most widely used softwares at one point. Microsoft has been moving to a more powerful software that was redesigned and created in 2005 it is the .net. It may be one of Microsofts mistakes because they are forcing users that are so prone to using their old software to change and learn the .net program because they are no longer going to support the old one. Users are beginning to either switch over to the .net while other users are switching to different companies because if they have to adapt to change they might as well learn something new. The cool thing about visual basic is it allows users to build what they want and draw which the part of why it is called visual. Some people say that visual basic helps people that cannot program but that is not true because if you can program this tool can help make your programs that much better because it can help you out while you program. Visual basics is object oriented and also allows for inheritance with the .net version. Prior versions did not support that.


HTML 5 The Plug-in Killer? {6}

The topic of my article is to explain the advantages of HTML 5 vs. Flash and Silverlight. HTML 5 is the newest web coding language which has revolutionized web development. With this advancement, people have speculated that there will be no need for additional plug-ins such as “…Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Sun JavaFX”. HTML 5 is geared towards web applications which are a new concept that competes with plug-ins. What make it so unique is the vast array of capabilities that cover video and graphics on the web. The article also explains that due to its vast capabilities, companies such as Apple, Google and Mozilla are supporting HTML 5 to better improve their websites. HTML 5 will allow companies to improve and expand on their website capabilities. Due to high popularity HTML 5 has been implemented to the top web browser for video tags, HTML 5 is starting to breakaway and become the new standard for web development. While Adobe, Microsoft and Oracle battle with their own technology to provide the best multimedia support on the web, HTML 5 is making strides to faze them all out. It is also trying to implement the same equivalent functions without the need of additional software. HTML 5 is still a new technology with a lot of room to expand and improve. It will still take years for the programming language to be fully implemented. Until then plug-in companies need to figure out ways to improve and keep their software beneficial for users to keep on using. The argument that people place when making HTML 5 the standard is keeping the only method or form to just that one method. If developers stop supporting it or using it we will be stuck as users.


iOS and HTML 5 {3}

For this week, I read an article in PC World on implementation of HTML 5.  It’s no secret that mobile phones have revolutionized the world of telecommunications.  Besides the obvious applications of fun and electronic entertainment, mobile phones have brought on countless business level applications such as the use of a smart phone to remotely access a company intranet.  Two major factors in the success of a particular kind of smart phone are its operating system and app quality/availability.  As predicted by many tech experts, HTML 5 is quickly becoming the standard for web-based apps.  Due to this fact, the true test of a smart phone’s capabilities is its operating system’s ability to deliver and implement HTML 5 directly.  This will determine how smoothly the phone runs as well as the quality of its apps.  PC World did a cross comparison between the Apple iOS used for their line of iPhones/iPads and Android which is found in different products such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab.  What was discovered was that Apple iOS outperformed Android in their ability to deliver HTML 5 properly.  The article concluded by stating that this might be the key to higher user satisfaction with Apple products; meaning that the true key to success in the smart phone industry is use of HTML 5.
I wrote about this article because we have been discussing more lately the importance of HTML 5 and how it’s becoming the industry standard.  In the cross comparison test mentioned in the article, the iPhone 4S handled approximately 200 moving objects at once while maintaining a frame rate of 30 FPS without slowing down.  On the other hand, it was determined that almost all Android smart phones could only handle one moving object without slowing down to a frame rate below 30 FPS.  Older versions of the iPhone such as the iPhone 3GS are capable of at least 50 moving objects while retaining 30 FPS.  From this it is no wonder that there has been so much talk of the importance of HTML 5.  Extensive knowledge of HTML 5 combined with some programming abilities can lead to a highly lucrative career.

The technology world is always ready for an upgrade, and HTML is definitely an upgrade compared to Flash, a video streaming option. Flash has been known to eat up a lot of processing power and battery life to stream video. Apple has been one of the first companies to fully commit and support HTML 5 and do everything it can to make the full transition to HTML 5. Although all evidence points to HTML 5 being apparent heir to replacing Flash, statistics still show that about 35% of the internet market is still using Internet Explorer, that still needs Flash to playback video. Mozilla and Google Chrome has already made the transition to HTML 5 video. However the real benefit of HTML 5 will be applied to mobile technology, but android phone still support Flash video, but Google has recently come out with a statement saying that future phones will not have any Flash plug-ins. It is only a matter of time when HTML 5 will completely replace Flash for any video streaming options.


Changing How You Use the Web {3}

HTML5 is relatively new concept in Web development. It is still developing and many web developers are starting to use it when creating web sites. HTML5 is not just some fancy markup lnaguage. Instead, it is a revised specification for how the foundational markup language of the web, HTML, is used to deliver just about anything you might see in a web browser. We developers are starting to use this increasingly. We are moving away from the original concept of the web as a series of documents linked together to the web as a light-weight software system centered on web applications. Developers had to work with plug-ins such as Adobe’s Flash if they wanted to make their web sites fancy and interactive. But now they can use HTML5. HTML5 has new features which are native to browers, which accounts for more responsive and seamless web app experience. Some of the new features in HTML5 are new parkup tags such as nav, section, article and much more allow for better divisions of content and provide meaningful human interaction and are machine-readable, new field types such as email and date allow search boxes and text inputs access to better tools for validation and interacting with user requests. It allows to create customized search results based on where you are sitting or using the web. End users can videos within browsers without needing to install any add-ons or plug-ins. One of the biggest concern for HTML5 is that its not really secured. Form and data validation in the brower can be routed around and could lead to hacking and security breaches. In the near future, more and more of the desktop browser web apps will start to use HTML5 and more websites utilizing the advanced features of HTML5. In this class, we learned basic HTML and CSS. I think the next step in web development would be to learn HTML5 and CSS3 and how to integrate it all in creating websites. I think the HTML5 would really be the next big thing in web development. A. Flash Lives–Thanks To Facebook and Games {4}

This week, i am going to blog about Flash, an almost-dead web technology, when its developer, Adobe, announced that they stopped developing Flash for mobile devices, and a more advanced web technology, HTML 5.0, has been introduced recently. However, while most websites developers starts moving on to HTML 5.0 or PHP, there are still many sites that have a large amount of Flash-only content. For example, Facebook, with over five hundred millions users all over the world, currently is one of the most popular websites that still uses Flash. Flash may be on its last legs, but it seems to be that Facebook is doing a great job to keep Adobe’s plug-in alive.

By now, you probably have heard of HTML 5 in some way shape or form. You may not be familiar with what it can do though; apple is seeking to change this. Apple created a site back in 2010 to show case some of the features that HTML 5 brings to the table. The site has several demos that include the latest in greatest in Web Standards and cover a number of features: CSS3, JavaScript, and HTML 5. At the time of the article, you needed to run Safari 4, but since this article is a couple years old, it may be safe to say the latest Firefox and Google Chrome maybe able to view it. The site also features HTML’s Play capabilities, and allows you to adjusts the size and scale of the video while the video is streaming. Another demo lets you play with “Rich Typography,” letting one change the font, font color, move the text and easily change the scaling of the font using the Scalable Vector Graphics. There are demos for audio as well, one demonstrates the audio tag in HTML 5 and allows you to add audio to your website without needing plug-ins, simply add by using the audio tag. Other demos included imagine transitions, 360-degree rotations around an object, and VR Browsers. All these features using HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS3. While showing off all the goodies they made a subtle shot at flash “Standards aren’t add-ons to the web. They are the web. And you can start using them today.” (Mulroy, 2010). HTML 5: Not Quite Stable {1}

Almost a year ago, browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, etc started popping up with HTML 5 but the problem was that it was not quite as stable as many would like. Yes it has great features but the problem many saw was the fact that a lot of testing still had to be done for it to be considered standardized. It is not to say that people weren’t trying out the features but a “comprehensive test suite” had yet to be completed. At the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), it was announced that the charter for the HTML 5 Working Group would be extended, meaning that people would continue to have their comments about HTML 5. However, there are hopes that a solid standard will be formed by 2014. Some of neat aspects about the HTML 5 that were being considered were the “one web concept” and “its new font framework.” But there are some controversial matters such as the codec for video tags because the W3C would prefer to use codec, but other big hitters like Microsoft and Apple use H.264. The reasoning behind preferring codec is simple, no one owns it; therefore it would be open and adequate. The authors point was that HTML 5 has the ability to bring new and fascinating opportunities to many industries, as we have already seen with Apple, for instance.

So we all know that HTML 5 is in the process of being standardized now.  According the article, <time>element was going to dropped from HTML 5 a few weeks back, but W3C saved it.  When the news came out that <time> element wasn’t going to in HTML 5 (Ian Hickson, HTML5 editor was going to drop it), a whole bunch of web developers were unhappy.  As we have practiced in the class and our class assignment, <time> element makes it easy for user-end web development to capture time to use for time-stamping  purpose and other data that needs time information.

The Microsoft Approach

Microsoft has had two brief demonstrations on the new Windows 8 live tile touch-based platform and have gotten developers all rowdy. They have demonstrated the platform and how it is going to work but have not emphasized anything on the application development which has SilverLight and .NET developers worried. They have said to be moving towards the HTML 5 and Java script market and focusing more on that, but many developers are concerned about the previous concepts becoming ancient history. Some developers are taking this as terrible news and some are just confused because Microsoft has yet to announce or answer any questions concerning developers roles and structure to this new platform. All that they know for now is that HTML 5 and JavaScript are to play a bigger role in this new up and coming platform. Windows 8 is said to be released sometime in 2012, but there is no exact date on that yet.
