The article that I read about was a peer review article called “Improving Data transmission in Web applications via the Translation between XML and JSON.” The article talks about the analysis of the form of two data serializing approaches used in the development of web applications using XML and JSON. The author remarks that both XML and JSON are used widely because of their high efficiency in transmitting data but still they cause certain application development problems. read more...

Programming Language of the Future {6}

The article I chose to blog about this week is titled, “Is Javascript the Future of Programming?” by Dani Fankhauser of Mashable Tech. JavaScript, “first created by Brendan Eich at Netscape in 1995” (Fankhauser). It was initially not taken by developers as a serious server side languages, such as Java, Python, or Ruby. However, over the years JavaScript has become more prolific and more widely used, and can even be used as a server side language with a framework  called Node.js.         Node.js is an “asynchronous, which makes it highly scalable and a great fit for all the big data out there”(Fankhauser). JavaScript is the only client side language, and runs directly in the browser gives it an edge over other languages.  JavaScript is now one of the preferred  ways of developing applications for Windows 8, Klout, Storify and Yammer because of its ability to be a front and back end language. This and the array of tools at its disposal such as Node.js, jQuery (a library), JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) and MongoDB, give JavaScript a very bright future to be a top language for both the front and back end of applications. read more...

JSON in application efficiency {3}

Jim Keeting writes about Javascript Object Notation, JSON, and about how modern web applications are geared torwards efficiency. At first there was Asynchronous Javascript and XML or AJAX for short but there is always a demand for more efficiency. Since then web developers have been trying to get the maximum amount of performance for the code they write. JSON is a result that originated from a coder by the name of Douglas Crockford, a senior Javascript architect at Yahoo. Crockford intended it to be a lightweight data-interchange format which meant that it would inheret the use of name and order values. This is why it has some similarities to programming languages. JSON’s purpose is to provide “a way to store information in an organized, easy-t0-access way” that was human and machine readable. JSON achieves this because it is an open source, text based exchange format that can operate independent from any programming language. This is why so many web application developers are switching over. Another thing that many coders did not was constraint. For example, using XML included the tedious task of having to write parses and having to assign variables using DOM APIs. With JSON you can generate or retrieve data easier with fewer, less complex, and  code. JSON can let you build smaller, faster, and more interactive applications for not just desktop audiences but also for phone and tablets. read more...
